Illustrator 8: Cel-style Colouring
Importing your sketch
If you've read the Photoshop tutorial already, you know how to scan and clean up a sketch - if you haven't you might want to take a quick look at it now. It's only the first page anyway. ^^;;;
Make sure you've also read my Illustrator Basics tutorial before you start, because this gets a little hairy later on.

For tracing in Illustrator, your drawing doesn't have to be very neat... although it helps to have mapped out where you're putting the shadows and highlights (that is, as if it were to be made into a cel). I've found that scanning at 75 to 100 dpi at 100% gives pretty decent results. Use Levels in Photoshop if your scan's really dirty, but a few stray lines won't hurt you. Save it as a TIFF.Open up Illustrator and a new file if necessary. I usually work at A4 size since it's fairly large and happens to be my default document size.

Go to the File menu and choose the Place command. A box will open up asking you to choose the file you want to place - pick the TIFF file you just saved and plonk it onto the page. You may have to scale the pic using the Selection Tool; hold down Shift and drag one of the image's corners to adjust its size.

Your image should be the size of the whole document area now. Don't worry if it looks a little pixellated; the drawing won't even be part of the final artwork.
